The Three Gorges Dam
The Three Gorges Dam began its construction in December of 1994 . It is still under construction, and it is due to be finished sometime in 2009. Built on the Yangtze, the dam is approximately 2,309 meters long, and stands 185 meters above sea level. The dam will cause a resivior to build up behind it. The resivior will hold about 39,000,000,000 cubic meters of water because it is about 1084 sq kilometers.
The new dam will carry 78% of China’s river traffic. The New Cleaner hydroelectric turbines will create energy when the water spins past them. The cleaner emmisions will reduce air pollution, causing a decrease in lung disease, the #1 killer in China. Larger Ships will be able to move through the river because the dam causes the large resivior.
